Charles Simic has been named as the new Poet Laureate of the U.S.A. At the same time, he’s been awarded the Academy of American Poets’ Wallace Stevens Award.

Since the nation began having a new poet laureate every year or two, it’s been interesting to see what each one brings to the position. Also, poetry gets more attention, maybe. But there was a certain dignity to having the same person hold the position for an extended period of time. Twenty years might have been too long.
